The Dayton C. Miller collection in the Library of Congress, contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and non-Western examples of flutes from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. Items in the collection date from the 16th to the 20th century.
Collier’s magazine, founded in 1888 by Irish immigrant Peter Collier, was launched as a magazine of Collier’s has always commissioned famous writers including Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, F. Scott Fitzgerald, J. D. Salinger, John Steinbeck, Pearl S. Buck, and Kurt Vonnegut to report on historical events, such as World War I and the Spanish Civil War, political events, or to write a short story or serialization of a novel.
