Cover Crops Protecting Lincoln County, SD, Flooded Cropland
On August 26, 2014, NRCS DIstrict Conservationist snapped these photos of cover crops growing east of Canton, SD, in Lincoln County. This cropland was flooded in a rain event during June 2014.
The purpose of the cover crop is to protect the soil from eroding but also to use the excess moisture in the soil profile in preparation for, hopefully, a 2015 crop season.
The cover crop planting was funded through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The flood plain is located east of Canton, SD. The seeding date was approximate 3 ½ weeks prior to the photo.
