Cracked surface of volcanic ash clayrocks

Chinle Formation rocks contain large amounts of volcanic ash. These ashes have weathered through time into clayrocks that turn back to expanding clay when they get wet. As it dries the rock shrinks and forms a cracked texture on its surface.
