Crewmen man the rails as the aircraft carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) returns to Norfolk for the last time before moving to its new home port at Mayport, Fla. A banner commemorating the ship's 25 years of service is hanging from the starboard bow missile sponson. Among the large harbor tugs assisting the KENNEDY are the OKMULGEE (YTB-765), PADUCAH (YTB-758) and the MARINETTE (YTB-791)

In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
