Summary

A very Happy St. Brigids day to you all! This, the feast day of Irelands female deity/saint is the herald of Spring and a day for women to celebrate. Labelled in the catalogue as "Antrim, possibly County Glen village, Co. Antrim", we begin the week with a stereo-pairs shot showing a village from on high - possibly with a canal nearby(?)..With thanks to today's commenters, we have confirmation that this is indeed County Antrim, and the village of Cushendall. The village was renamed by an 18th and 19th century estate to Newtown Glens, but later reverted to Cushendall - this may perhaps explain the unusual name applied to the image in our catalogue..... .Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: between ca. 1860-1883..NLI Ref: STP_0477 ( vtls000563794 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
