THE MISERICORDS OF EXETER CATHEDRAL. Stiff Leaf (No. 10).Still the trefoil, but this is a more elaborate conception.The central group of three trefoils is reduced in size, and thelower boss, instead of being an accessory, as in most cases, isthe principal feature. It consists of trefoil leaves admirablyarranged to form a circle. The actual design is very similarto the terminals of No. 45, but the workmanship is better.The terminals are volutes with trefoils filling the curves ; thaton the dexter side is on a larger scale than its companion, andhas lost about 1 \ inches of its width—cut off when it was putinto its new frame. Stiff Leaf (No. 20).This was evidently worked on at two periods; the centraldevice is three stiff leaves, resembling on a larger scale thoseof No. 10; but at the junction of the stems are two naturalmaple leaves, one overlapping the other, which might well befound in the Decorated period.
