Dexter house, Green Street - Charleston, Boston Mass.

Dexter house, Green Street. Built by Samuel Dexter in 1794. The beautiful stairway was the admiration of all visitors. Dexter sold the house in 1800 to Giles Alexander. Nathan Bridge, son of Matthew, lived there from 1814 to his death in 1830. He developed a truly fine garden and kept fully up to the times in the adornment of his grounds and the variety of his plants. The small green house was on the upper part of the garden and had a fine show of espaliered apricot, nectarine, and peach trees arranged in various shapes between the greenhouse and the wall. A Sechel pear tree was grafted from the original Sechel in Germantown, Penna. In 1850, what remained of the estate was laid into twelve house lots and sold to Winthrop Church, Dexter Row, etc. The mansion house and its lot was purchased by Rhodes G. Rockwood. It was made over in 1887 by the Abraham Lincoln Post, G.A.R. into a hall for their gatherings. The fence at the right is probably that of the Winthrop Church.
