Thursday, August 18.—T rode on ahead of the party fromMr. Hartzells ranch, stopping at Radersburg for dinner andriding through a snow storm to Gallatin City, where I re-mained over night with Major Gampbell. General Wash-burn thought that it would be well for some members of the Washburn Yellowstone Expedition of 1870. 3 company to have a conference, as early as possible, with thecommanding officer at Fort Ellis, concerning an escort of sol-diers. I also desired to confer with some of the members ofthe Bozeman Masonic Lodge concerning the lodge troubles;and it was for these reasons that I rode on to Bozeman inadvance of the party.

THE START. Prickly Pear Valley. Friday, August 19.—Rode over to the East Gallatin riverwith Lieutenants Batchelor and Wright, crossing at Blake-leys bridge and reaching Bozeman at 7 oclock p. m. Saturday, August 20.—Spent the day at Bozeman and atFort Ellis. I met the commanding officer, ^lajor Baker, ofthe Second I^. S. Cavalry, who informs me that nearly allthe men of his command are in the field fighting the Indians. 4 Washburn Yellowstone Expedition of 1870. I informed him that we had an order for an escort of sol-diers, and he said that the garrison w^as so weakened that hecould not spare more than half a dozen men. I told himthat six men added to our own roster would enable us to dogood guard dut). The rest of the party and the pack traincame into Bozeman at night. This evening I visited Gallatin Lodge No. 6, and after afull consultation with its principal officers and members, Ireluctantly decided to exercise my prerogative as GrandMaster and arrest the charter of the lodge
