Elk in Velvet with Cowbirds - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
For most of the year, a bull elk's antlers are covered in a soft fuzzy tissue called velvet. This tissue will be rubbed off at the end of summer to reveal the fully grown antlers underneath. If a bull's diet is nutritious enough, the antlers can grow up to 1 cm per day.
