Ellicott Arch leading to the start of the 99 Steps
Summary
Separating walkers from the carriage road above, the Ellicott Arch is a classic example of Olmsted's idea of "separation", which dealt not only with transportation, but use of different areas. In the case of Franklin Park, 1/3 of the land was devoted to more "excertive" recreation - like sports, while the rest of the park was for more "passive" recreation which allowed for more relaxing pursuits like promenading or just sitting and enjoying the views.
