Subsequently his physicians recom-mended a voyage across the ocean and entire restfrom business as the only means of saving his life.In 1870 he made the trip to Europe, spendingseveral months on the continent and placing him-self under the care of Sir Henry Thompson. Thiscourse resulted, after long debility, in an entirecure. In 1861, 1862, and 1866, he was a member ofthe House, and in 1867 a member of the Senate.In 1868 he was delegate-at-large at the NationalRepublican Convention at Chicago, acting inplace of the late Hon. H. H. Starkweather, and 18 as secretary of the Connecticut delegation. In1882 he was nominated for the office of Judge ofProbate for his district, but declined the honor.He has often been called to act in places of trustand responsibility, and at the present time has large interests in Mexico under his care. He hasmany ardent friends at home and elsewhere, andno doubt need be felt of his fidelity or of hiscompetency to fill the office to which he has beencalled.

21 General FREDERICK E. CAMP, ADJUTANT-GENERAL, Of Middletown, was a member of the Twenty-fourth Connecticut, enlisting in 18G2. He waspromoted to the rank of First Lieutenant, andwas mustered out with his command Sept. 30,1863, after thirteen months of service. Soonafterwards he received the appointment of Cap-tain in the Twenty-ninth Connecticut. Volun-teers, and in November, 1864, was promoted torank of Major. January 1, 1865, he was madeLieutenant-Colonel of the Twenty-ninth UnitedStates Colored Troops, and served in that capac-ity until the muster out of his command in No-vember, 1865. His service in the Twenty-fourthConnecticut Volunteers was under General Banksin the Department of the Gulf, and he carries abullet in his body which he received at the siegeof Port Hudson. In the Twenty ninth Connec-ticut and Twenty-ninth United States ColoredTroops, he served in the department of the Southand in Virginia, being present with the latterregiment at Appomattox at Lees surrender.
