Elizabeth was a niece of the noted artist George Caleb Bingham. Elijah and Elizabeth parented three sons (John B., Hallack, and Gaither) and two daughters (Mrs. A.J. Stephen and Mrs. Arthur Palmer). Elijah worked as a coal dealer and was joined in the business by his son, John, under the name of E. Hutchison & Son. Elijah Hutchison served on the Independence City Council from 1910 to 1912. Elizabeth Hutchison died in 1923; Elijah died in 1937 at his home at 526 West Maple Avenue.
