Summary
This winter image is of the first fairground development located about a mile north of Colfax, Washington along the Palouse River. The location was in close proximity to the current Wilber Ellis site. The first fair was held in October of 1882. For many years the neighboring communities held their own small fairs. From 1924 to 1929, the fair was held at Garfield, Washington. Finally in 1939 all the small communities were asked to participate in one county fair which was held at Schmuck Park (today the ball field) in Colfax, Washington. The fair continued in Colfax until it was moved (circa 1949) to it's permanent home at Mockonema, a few miles west of Colfax on Highway # 26. Source: Colfax 100 Plus by Edith E. Erickson.
