Fort Mason Piers, circa 1915 - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery

This early photo shows Pier 2 as one the first constructed pier buildings. Many of the other related buildings have not yet been constructed. The flurry of vehicle activity is centered at Pier 2, which is servicing 3 ships on its west side and 1 ship on its east side. Notice that the scale of the ship is fairly comperable compared to the building. In the future, the ships that dock at Fort Mason will be much larger and will eventually loom over the pier buildings.
