Fort Washington (Fort Washington, Maryland)
Summary
Fort Washington was the lone citadel that protected the nation's capital at the start of the Civil War in 1861. The fort was lightly garrisoned by Federal troops throughout the war. The Union Army designed and built two formidable works to protect Washington from the Potomac River: Fort Foote, a few miles north of Fort Washington, and Battery Rodgers, located off Jones Point in Alexandria Virginia.
