n a years time, an offer of $200was rejected,not because the schoolneeded no money, but becauseit was intended from the first to bea grateful acknowledgment of thevaluable aid rendered by one whosename shall be forever linked withour Catholic Indian Missions—Mother Katharine Drexel. Carpet weaving furnishes use-ful and agreeable occupation forboth boys and girls. Very smallboys and girls sew the rags, whilethe boys who preside over the loompride themselves on the numberof yards of carpet they turn out ina year. Still progress in industri-al work has been no obstacle toliterary pursuits. Each year, anumber of pupils finish the eighthgrade, and, for several years past,a few have persevered through theninth. This year we have fourwho are particularly fond of Alge-bra. Even when the school con-sisted of but two classrooms, asmentioned at the beginning of thischapter, St. Marys pupils werewinning laurels. St. Marys Indian School, 1883 — 1918 FRANCISCAN HERALD 237 wa Indian ever ordained priest, re-ceived a teachers certificate whilea pupil in one of these rooms, hav-ing successfully passed the Countyexamination, at the age of sixteen.At least a half dozen of our girlshave entered religious communi-ties ; and among the positions filledto-day by former pupils may be re-corded those of postmaster, as-sistant postmaster, stenographer,traveling stenographer for a rail-road manager, and doctor; whilethe number serving our country inthis trying hour is not far from ahundred, some of whom have beenwounded somewhere in France,some of whom, at this moment,may be making the supreme sacri-fice. Though devoting particular at-tention to the children of the vil-lage of whom there are now overtwo hundred of school age, St.Marys takes special pleasure inseeking out those who would other-wise be deprived of the blessing ofa Catholic education.
