Frost in the trees - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
The view east down the Missouri River channel from Fort Union's south palisade gallery. Frost-covered trees such as these are a common sight in North Dakota in mid December. Seeing such a sight first-hand helps one sense and imagine the isolation fur traders must felt when they realized many months would pass before the next year's steamboat from St. Louis would appear in the far distance.
