Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church
Summary
Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church was built between 1698 and 1700 as a Lutheran Church for Swedish colonists. Their first place of worship had been a log structure built in 1677 and located elsewhere, when the colony was under Dutch control. The Swedish Church continued to thrive after William Penn's 1701 Charter of Privileges which allowed for freedom of worship. Almost 150 years later, in 1845, it became an Episcopal church.
