Gold Mt. Zion Mountaineers pin, 1939. Donated by Lois (Hall) Williams. Museum Catalog No. ZION 6296.
Summary
This souvenir pin commemorated the climbing of Mount Zion, also called Lady Mountain, a popular trail in Zion’s early days. Built in 1924, it was one of the earliest trails to reach Zion Canyon’s rim from the valley floor, and many chose to celebrate their hike by purchasing keepsakes like this gold pin. It was a strenuous route up Lady Mountain, as hikers climbed 2,650 vertical feet over just 1.9 miles with the aid of cables, metal ladders, and 1400 carved steps. This hardware was removed and the trail was decommissioned in the late 1970s due to safety concerns.
