Grand Canyon Kolb Studio Renovation 2013-14 (24)

description

Summary

Restorative work on windows - involves removal of failed modern latex paints and glazing compounds, and reinstallation of linseed based glazing putty and solvent free linseed based paints. The historic linseed based materials will long outlast the modern finishes, which for a building like Kolb Studio (hard to access for repairs) is a good investment and more sustainable approach. GCA Photo by Terri Attridge. Kolb Studio clings to the edge of Grand Canyon. It was the home and photographic studio of Grand Canyon pioneers, Emery and Ellsworth Kolb, and was begun in 1904. Today, this historic studio is open year-round. It contains an exhibit hall, bookstore, and information center operated by the Grand Canyon Association. During 2013 and 2014, with help from donors, GCA is in the process of rehabilitating this valuable piece of Grand Canyon History in order to keep it available for generations to come. Work includeds: Addressing structural degradation of Kolb Studio by: a) rectifying drainage problems from public sidewalks and corresponding retaining walls, b) stabilizing the concrete entranceway to assure safe continuing access to the facility c) repairing and replacing exterior building features (e.g. log and shingle siding, structural beams, gutters, wooden porches) in order to assure long-term structural integrity of the building and d) protecting restored exterior surfaces with paints, sealants and other coatings. www.grandcanyon.org/arts-and-culture/kolb-studio
