description

Summary

Grand Parade as I've never seen it, half empty, no buses, no crowds and with the fountain in a different place! Cork has proven to be a happy hunting ground for us in the past, so for this week's final contribution it will be interesting to see if we are as lucky once more(?) Not a dog in sight as I see it - though it was a long exposure as demonstrated by the ghosts - so a fast dog may have passed unnoticed!..With thanks in particular to Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) we know that this image dates to the mid-1890s. Or, at least, likely no earlier than c.1893 (when Mr William Day had yet to open his tailor shop at #36). And likely no later than c.1898 (when evidence of trams and their tracks would've been visible)......Photographer: Robert French..Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Catalogue range circa 1865-1914. Likely circa mid-1890s...NLI Ref: L_CAB_02568 ( vtls000337310 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
