Summary

Students of the Grandview school system enjoy using the swing set on a playground on Oakland Avenue between First and West Third Avenues behind the Fairview Avenue Grade School. The two houses shown overlooking this playground are 1251 Oakland Avenue and 1263 Oakland Avenue. The southern side of 1271 Oakland Avenue is also visible at the far right of the photograph, and 1273 Ashland Avenue can be seen in the more distant background. The Grandview school system had an enrollment of 529 students in 1917. There were 20 teachers; four in the high school and 16 in the lower grades. The Grandview school system consisted of three buildings; the Fifth Avenue Grade School, the Fairview Avenue Grade School, and the Fairview Avenue High School. The Fairview Avenue Grade School also had a 350-seat auditorium that offered frequent educational picture shows free to the community.
