description

Summary

The Grotto building, seen in this image, is the oldest existing building in Zion, originally built in 1924 as the park’s first museum and visitor center. This hand-colored photograph is from the museum’s collection of historic glass lantern slides. After the building was restored in 2009, Assistant Chief of Interpretation Tom Haraden created this framed photograph using some of the original fir floorboards. Today, the Grotto house is one of 28 places in Zion listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a temporary residence for participants in the park’s Artist-in-Residence program.
