Summary

Hawk bells were originally used as part of falconry equipment Europe before being utilized as fur trade goods when they were introduced to North America in the 16th century. This 18th century example is made of cupreous sheet metal with an iron clapper seed or "bell" inside the pressed metal which forms the spherical shape, which measures 1.5 cm diameter. The North West Company inventoried 1,584 hawk bells at the Grand Portage depot in 1797.
