Hibiscus bloom, War in the Pacific National Historical Park, 2016.
Summary
Hibiscus belong to a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family. This large family contains several hundred species native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Plants in this family are often noted for their showy flowers and are all commonly called hibiscus or, sometimes, rose mallow. Leaves are alternate (i.e., spiral or opposite), ovate to lanceolate (i.e., oval like an egg to shaped like the head of a tapering lance) and often have a toothed or lobed margin - as you can see.
