eriodwhen schools were being founded quite frequently in New Eng-land that Mrs. Sarah Derby decided to devote a considerableportion of the property acquired from her first husband, Dr.Ezekiel Hersey, a distinguished physician in his native town ofHingham, to the establishment of a school. She also was anative of Hingham, and was born April 18, 1714. Her portraithangs on the wall of the school. In 1784 Madam Derby conveyed to ten trustees the landupon which the academy building stands, to be used for such apurpose after her death; but for the more effectual execution oftheir trust, and in accordance with the terms of that trust, thesaid trustees obtained from the General Court an Act of Incor-poration of the Derby School Nov. 11, 1784. Madam Derby died June 17, 1790. She made liberal pro-visions in her will for the benefit of the school; and it wasopened April 5, 1791. The Massachusetts policy of granting lands in Maine toacademies made it for the pecuniary advantage of the school (56)

>- UJQ< o CO cchia ui</) o I Z< < <u I DERBY ACADEMY. 67 to be an incorporated academy; and on June 17, 1797, the Derby School was erected into an academy by the name of Derby Academy by an act of the General Court. From the date of the opening of the school in 1791 untilthe present time it has continued to furnish instruction to suchpupils as have resorted to it in varying numbers. At firstthe male and female pupils were taught separately in separaterooms, —the boys by a preceptor and the girls by a preceptress ;but since 1849, partially, and since 1852, wholly, the boys andgirls have been taught together. The building which was upon the land at the time of MadamDerbys death was used for school purposes until 1818, whenthe present building was erected. In accordance with the provisions of IMadam Derbys willa sermon, known as the Derby Lecture, is preached annuallyto the scholars of the academy. For man)^ years Lecture Daywas a notable occasion.
