Historic Dyea Townsite - National Parks Gallery
Summary
Historic Townsite
Dense stands of black cottonwood, Sitka spruce, and red alder fill the Taiya River floodplain. As the coastal forest transitions into a boreal forest that extends about 1,000 feet up the valley slopes, western hemlock, Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine, and western paper birch cloak the hillsides. A stunted, wind-sculptured forest of mountain hemlock and subalpine fir stretches to the treeline at approximately 1,500 feet.
