Sixth Wisconsin on the left. Advancing some distance the skirmishersreported a force of cavalry and infantry concealed in a piece of pinewoods skirting the river, immediately in front. The four centercompanies of the Twenty-fourth were broken to the rear and six ofBattery Bs guns planted in the space. They opened fire at once andshelled the woods. BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG. 93 The Iron Brigade then advanced in two hnes on the wood.
