Hoary marmot, Denali National Park and Preserve, 2015.
Summary
As N. America's largest squirrel, the hoary marmot (Marmota caligata) can weigh over 20-lbs. This species inhabits the mountains of northwest North America, living near the tree line on slopes. These areas provide grasses to eat and rocky areas for cover. It is often called a 'whistle pig' because of the characteristic high-pitched warning sound it uses to alert colony members of possible dangers.
