Painter and sculptor,Leonardo was also a poet, and not among the leastof these. He is, indeed,pre-eminently a poet ; firstof all, in his pictures, which evoke a wholeworld of delicious impres-sions ; and secondly, inhis prose writings, notablyin his Trattato delta Pit-tura, which has only latelybeen given to the worldin its integrity. Whenhe consented to silence the analytic faculty so strongly developed inhim, his imagination took flight with incomparable freedom andexuberance. In default of that professional skill, which degeneratestoo easily into routine, we find emo-tion, fancy, wealth and originality ofimages ; qualities which also count formuch. If Leonardo knows nothingof current formulae, of winged andstriking words, of the art of con-densation, he acts upon us by someindwelling charm, by some magicoutburst of genius. The thinker and the moralist areallied to the poet. Leonardos ap.
