Fort Vancouver. The original Indian Trade Shop and Dispensary was built during the years 1836-1841. The reconstruction was completed in 1981. It is a one and one-half story building of post-on-still construction. The gable roof if covered with shingles, and it has exposed rafters.
The fort served as a hub for the Hudson's Bay Company business activities, well-positioned with easy access to the Columbia River but out of the flood plain. It was surrounded by open meadows and dense coniferous forest, contributing to the fort's economic success and self-sufficiency.
