The English captured the New Netherlands (1664) andchanged its name to New York. 6. That part of the colony of New York lying west of theHudson was sold by the Duke of York to some friends,(1673) and became the Colony of New Jersey. 7. New England was settled by EngUsh Puritans at Ply-mouth, Mass., in 1620. They were people who did not be-lieve in the Church of England and were driven from homein consequence. 8. New Hampshire was settled (1623) by Puritans fromMassachusetts, and from England. 9. Part of Connecticut was claimed by the Dutch, butEnglish Puritans settled there as early as 1633; in 1662 thevarious settlements became the colony of Connecticut. 10. Rhode Island was settled by Englishmen fromMassachusetts, led by Roger WilUams. They had becomedissatisfied with the beliefs and actions of the Massachu-setts Puritans.
