Summary

Mr. Herbert Bayard Swope, executive editor of the New York World, commissioned the artist to make a drawing for publication, of this international championship fight. The lithograph resulted from this material. (Bellows) / It was the first million dollar gate--more than 80,000 spectators--at "Boyle's Thirty Acres" in jersey City on July 2, 1921. Bellows had been invited by Herbert Bayard Swope, editor of the New York "World" to record the match between the glamorous French world light-heavyweight champion, Georges Carpentier, and Jack Dempsey, the world heavyweight champion. The "introduction" proved to be the best part of the fight for Carpentier; he was knocked out by Dempsey in the fourth round. Dempsey as victor was not popular with the crowd since he had recently been accused of being a draft dodger by the American Legion. There is no notation of this print in the artist's record book.
