Robert French - Irish water buffaloes?
Summary
This smashing shot from the lens of Mr. French looks so crisp and clear that one could imagine that you were looking at it live! Lough Gill in Sligo is beautiful at any time and this captures the atmosphere and life of the place. Can we locate that place today? ..And indeed we can. Or, at least, Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) and BeachcomberAustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) can. The OSI 6" (1888-1913) map ( http://map.geohive.ie/mapviewer.html?webmap=cc55e8232eea4462bd9aca278efb9c1d ) confirms that this is an "aermotor pump" attached to Hazelwood (or is it Hazlewood) House ( Hazelwood_House,_Sligo ) in Calry, County Sligo.......Photographer: Robert French..Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely after c.1880s (windmill)..NLI Ref: L_CAB_05640 ( vtls000334355 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
This collection as well as all massive collections on Picryl.com required two steps: First, we picked a manually curated set to train AI vision to recognize windmills, and after that, we run image recognition through all 25M+ images in our database. All media in the collection is in the public domain. There is no limitation on the dataset usage - educational, scientific, or commercial.
