Jean Francois Pierre Peyron - The Death of Socrates - Google Art Project

Peyron was born in 1744 in Marseille, France, and began his artistic training at the Académie de Marseille. He later moved to Paris to study with Jacques-Louis David, who became a lifelong friend and colleague. Peyron's early work was heavily influenced by David's neoclassical style, and he became known for his depictions of historical and mythological scenes. He also produced portraits and genre paintings and was an accomplished printmaker. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Peyron was a passionate collector of art and antiquities. He amassed an important collection of Greek and Roman artefacts, which he displayed in his home and used as inspiration for his paintings. Peyron's career was interrupted by the French Revolution, during which he served briefly as a member of the Revolutionary Tribunal. However, he soon returned to his artistic pursuits and continued to work until his death in 1814. Today, Peyron's paintings can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
