Summary

John Harvard monument in Phipps Street Burial Ground. Bunker Hill Monument shows in the right background and at the extreme left one gets a clear view of the true Bunker Hill, with five houses and a windmill near its summit. The beautiful white church in the center background is the edifice erected by the First Baptist Society in 1801 on land donated by Oliver Holden. In 1882, Thomas Doane built the present apartment house, "The Salem," on this site. In 1880, the Baptists built on Austin St. and sold this edifice to James Harrison who in turn sold in 1815 to the newly formed Unitarian Society. This Harvard Church removed to Thompson Square in 1819, selling to the Methodists, who worshipped here for at least 28 years. In 1847 or so, it was sold to Josiah Brackett, and used . . .
