Jollity Theatre during World War I

description

Summary

Turnip Tops' performing a dance, France, during World War I. These cross-dressed soldiers seem to be quite happy and relaxed in their role as performers and entertainers. Soldiers were mainly responsible for their own entertainment and so there was a rise in the popularity of amateur dramatics at this time.
This photograph is one of a series taken of this amateur dramatics group. Soldiers were, in the main, responsible for filling their own leisure time and so this sort of image is quite common.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. HIGHLANDERS PRODUCE MUSICAL COMEDY. "TURNIP TOPS". "The Jollity Theatre".']
