Dan Cooper. Dan Cooper. 359 different from other peoples; but he wears a veritablewomans petticoat, of coarse blue material, reaching downto his heels, which gives him a somewhat patriarchalappearance. Dan manages to live respectably, being both able andwilling to work when he gets the chance. His chief occu-pation is carrying in coals for the lieges; and as he isgenerally liked as well as pitied, he may be said to have amonopoly of the business. He has also an allowance fromthe parochial board; and as he is often treated to platesof soup and other viands, besides occasional gifts of pennies,he may be said to be fairly comfortable. Every one has their troubles in this world, however, andDan does not escape; possibly his greatest being thefrolicsome boys on the street, who delight to make pretenceof stealing the coals under his charge, for the pleasure andexcitement of being chased by him.
