Summary

Blue or Pink? A girl or boy? Which gender was Lady Waterford's baby in this beautiful image from the Poole Collection? ..We had noted that some mothers might give an arm and a leg to have a comparable waistline - certainly after having such a fine bouncing baby. Today's contributors however point-out that perhaps someone in Poole studio "enhanced" elements of the photo :)..On "who/when", the consensus is that the baby pictured (mercifully not "enhanced") is Lady Waterford's first child, born in 1898. The baby girl was given a name bigger than herself: Lady Blanche Maud de la Poer Beresford ( http://thepeerage.com/p1171.htm ) . She was the daughter of Henry Beresford (6th Marquess Waterford), and Beatrix Petty-FitzMaurice ( Beatrix_Beauclerk,_Marchioness_of_Waterford ) (Marchioness of Waterford). Lady Waterford remarried after the death of the Marquess, and was later styled Duchess of St Albans. (A different/later "Duchess of St Albans" from the one we met last week ( ...nlireland/32907294474/ ) ..... I know. I'm confused too :) )...Photographer: A. H. Poole..Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Search/Results?lookfor=A.H.+Poole&type=Author&sort=title&view=grid ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Though likely c.1898..NLI Ref: POOLEWP 1013 ( vtls000591109 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
