Lazy Beds, Newcastle Co.Down. Northern Ireland
Summary
An idyllic Rural/Seaside shot with some fine horticultural practice in the foreground but where is it?..Location was identified by our great supporter derangedlemur ( /photos/8468254@N02/ ) as Newcastle Co. Down...Is it me or do "lazy beds" remind you of anything else but the great famine? Driving or walking in the west of Ireland you can still see the remains of the beds on the high slopes of hills and mountains. Even in good times the poor people must have been destitute...Thanks to arensee ( /photos/arensee/ ) for his "today photo" from the same location, I have linked to it below...Bwana_Samaki ( /photos/16693700@N03/ ) Tells us "In seaside locations the lazy beds were made of layers of sand and seaweed, with the windward side of each bed being higher to afford protection to the young plants. This allowed cultivation of otherwise hostile land"...Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton. .Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence. .Collection: The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) . .Date: [between ca. 1865-1883. .NLI Ref: STP_1280 ( vtls000564593 ) . .You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
