Summary

'Ld. Nelson receiving his Death Wound'
A naïve print showing the death of Nelson on the deck of the ‘Victory’. Nelson is portrayed in the centre having just received the fatal shot. A sailor prepares to catch him as he swoons. To the right an officer clutching a sword rushes forward. Two other sailors can be seen manning a cannon on the left. On the poop deck two soldiers aim their rifles towards the enemy. This simplistic image conveys the story of the fatal wounding of Nelson in a plain way, with the wheel, fire buckets and deck reduced to a schematic design.
Printed a year after Nelson’s death, it was one of many similar images reproduced cheaply in great numbers for a mass market. See also PAI5304, ‘Neptune drawn by Sea Horses, and preceded by Tritons bearing Emblematic Devices, Supporting his favourite Son Admiral Lord Nelson, in his Last Moments.’
