arriage of her sister saint, the nun ofSiena, will occur to every one who has been at Florence;and there is a smaller picture by the same painter in theLouvre; — a different version of the same subject. I must content myself with referring to these well-knownpictures, which have been often engraved, and dwell more indetail on another, not so well known, and, to my feeling,as pre-eminently beautiful and poetical, but in the earlyFlemish, not the Italian style — a poem in a language lesssmooth and sonorous, but still sl poem. This is the altar-piece painted by Hemmelinck for thecharitable sisterhood of St. Johns Hospital at Bruges. TheVirgin is seated under a porch, and her throne decoratedwith rich tapestry; two graceful angels hold a crown overher head. On the right, St. Catherine, superbly arrayed as aprincess, kneels at her side, and the beautiful infant Christbends forward and places the bridal ring on her finger.
