Letter from Arnold Buffum, Boston, [Massachusetts], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1832 [October] 10

Arnold Buffum writes to William Lloyd Garrison, telling him of discussions held "relative to sending an Agent to England to collect subscriptions for our proposed school for colored youth" and the decision that it would be best for Garrison to "go immediately to England for that purpose." Buffum details how he has "contacted several of the most wealthy men in Providence" to help fund the trip and he tells Garrison to return to Boston to prepare to sail from New York on the first of November. He also says that "A Colored man now here from Petersburg, Virginia" has $200 he wishes to contribute "for the benefit of the colored people" that he might give to them, since new laws prohibiting the meeting of African-Americans closed his missionary society. Buffum asks Garrison to write him immediately with his decision, and, in the postscript, he asserts that "Garrison in England will do the cause more good in 3 months than 12 in America."
