Letter from Elizur Wright, New York, to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1834 March 3

Elizur Wright Jr. writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding an outrage enacted on a colored family. He writes, "the trial of a colored family who had been handed out of their beds as slaves the night before. I never had occasion to feel more indignation at the mocking of justice by which colored men are seized and turned over to hopeless bondage. The particulars of the case & the results, you will..see in the papers." He explains that the committee will probably "direct your labors principally to New England." He writes of the difficulty in obtaining agents for the society as well as the conditions of the southern states with regard to slavery. He writes, "We receive also from the South a plenty of cursed and some pamphlets defending Slavery from Scripture--one especially is ominous, being 'got up' in Charleston since the National Convention."
