Letter from Joseph Lupton, Leeds, [England], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1856 Dec[ember] 14

Joseph Lupton writes to Mary Anne Estlin in regards to letters sent from Harriet Martineau to Mrs. Chapman that should be also sent to her. He writes, "I am sorry to hear of your loss in the West of England of over friend [S. Alfred] Steinthal, but rejoice in the join he will be to our Liverpool friends, whom I hope he will be able to rouse their slumbers in the Anti-Slavery work.I hope he may stir up fresh zeal in this subject." He had a long talk with Julia Griffiths. He told her about "her protege F.D. & our friends in Boston." He is fully occupied with anti-slavery work, the American Anti-Slavery Society, and the Boston Bazaar. He writes of a dispute between Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison and dividing contributions between the Boston Bazaar and Rochester Bazaar. He discusses Julia Griffith's character and the language she uses. He writes, "that it is such a pity that F. Douglass' paper should suffer from having such a misguided advocate, zeal without wisdom."
