Letter from Lewis Tappan, New York, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1834 Oct[ober] 7

Lewis Tappan writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking about the proper date to hold the monthly "Concert of prayer for our colored brethren." He asks Garrison whether the fourth Monday or the last Monday of each month is the correct date and requests that he "give notice in the Liberator which evening was intended by the N[ew] E[ngland] Abolitionists, to be observed as a Concert for the enslaved." In the postscript, Tappan says "We are highly pleased with Mr. [George] Thompson" and he insists that "a bold stand in defence of freedom of speech, must be taken," warning that if they listen to "the threats of a prostituted press, & infuriated men, not only our cause is gone, but the liberties of the nation also."
