They are sitting in trees in Fair Oaks, Virginia in 1862. A handwritten note underneath the photo reads: “The Class Mates Lieu J.B. Washington C.S.A and [?][Illegible] Gen Jos E. Johnston at Fair Oaks. Beside him sits Lieu-George A. Custer of the 5 US Cavalry Both were West Point Graduates.” It was taken by an unknown photographer in 1862.
