Summary

Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, who serves as the commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and Multi-National Division - Baghdad, speaks to 4th Inf. Div. and Central Texas Families gathered together on April 12 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. Hammond spoke to those taking advantage of an opportunity to enjoy the home opener for the Round Rock Express, a Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, via sat satellite communications from Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq. Along with his fellow Ironhorse Soldiers, he gave the ceremonial order to "Play Ball" as the Express kicked off their diamond engagement on a winning note when they defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 7-3. His image was broadcast over the field's full-color LED video screen, which measures 16-feet high by 21-feet wide, and provided him the ability to speak to hundreds of the division's Family and friends from the Fort Hood area. He spoke of the professionalism of their Soldiers and said they should be proud of all they accomplish - each and every day - during the deployment. The native of Hattiesburg, Miss., also focused on the reasons the division's Soldiers are so proud to serve their nation: Mission, Soldier, Family, Team. The 4th Inf. Div. band had the honors of playing the national anthem before Hammond presented the order for the crowd to enjoy themselves and think of their loved ones. Although the start time was 7 p.m., April 11, in Round Rock, it was 3 a.m., April 12, for Hammond and his team in Iraq. (U.S. Army photo/Sgt. Mark Matthews)
