Summary

Maj. Marilyn Upton, casualty assistance officer for the Mississippi Army National Guard, tells the incredible story of the return of Pfc. Harvey Nichols’ remains after 77 years during funeral services at Calvary Baptist Church in Braxton Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019. Nichols, of Braxton, died in a Japanese prison camp in 1942 of malaria and malnutrition at the age of 27 after surviving the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands in December 1941 and the Bataan Death March. Thanks to new DNA testing, his remains were identified amidst 14 others in an unmarked grave and returned home for burial after 77 years. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. Scott Tynes)
