description

Summary

This map shows changes to the park’s boundaries since it was first set aside as Mukuntuweap National Monument in 1909. Shown in dark blue, this initial area included only Zion Canyon and its walls. This federally protected land was significantly expanded and renamed Zion National Monument in 1918, before becoming Zion National Park in 1919. The Kolob Canyons area, shown in yellow, was set aside as a national monument in 1937, and was incorporated into Zion in 1956. Today, Zion’s boundaries encompass 148,732 acres (232 square miles) and contain a wide array of ecosystems, wildlife, archeological sites, and other natural and cultural resources protected by the National Park Service.
